Hi! SO many requests for a “Before the Blog” series from y’all which is very fun! I’m excited to go back in time and answer some of the questions I’ve received from y’all on insta-stories, blog comments, emails, etc. Thank you so much for supporting this sister blog and for your interest in our lives – now and before this blog. We so appreciate you!
Now onto a fun little Q+A style of my most asked questions regarding my husband and me!
Q: How do you pronounce your husband’s name?
A: DEFINITELY a top question I’m asked. You pronounce it “SPEAR-OH.” The “s” on the end is indeed silent. I do call him “Spy” or “Spear” for short sometimes :).
Q: Now that that’s settled, where did you and Spyros meet?
A: In college :)! We attended Wake Forest University. Spyros and I actually met my freshman year. Fun fact: his two younger sisters also went to WFU and I was the same year as his youngest sister, and the year below (and in the same sorority) as the middle sister :)! I was (and obviously still am) friends with his sisters, and us girls hung out at his fraternity a lot, sooo Spyros and I knew each other, but we both had significant others and zero interest – ha! We wound up “re-meeting” in August 2009 when I was a sophomore and Spyros was a senior and we were both newly single with “NO DESIRE TO DATE ANYONE” and so the story goes…! I remember trying to figure out the times he went to Gold’s Gym in college when we started “talking” so I could just magically appear there and workout on the treadmill, acting like I didn’t even see him lifting weights, then he would come up and talk to me. Omg. I am such a dork but it worked!
Q: How far apart are y’all in age?
A: We are three years apart in age but two years apart grade-wise. Spyros is the older one (if that wasn’t obvious).
Q: Did you date long distance when Spyros graduated?
A: Yes, eventually. Spyros got a job in Winston-Salem when he graduated, so we didn’t have to date long distance my junior year. He literally lived down the street from my house, and we saw each other every day. I believe that year was transformative for us. So I am very thankful that God placed the Winston job in Spyros’ lap and that we had that year to really spend time together. My senior year Spyros accepted a job in Boston which turned into two long, long distance years. I spent as many weekends and spring, fall, etc. breaks in Boston with him while in school – I absolutely LOVED Boston. I would go walk around and explore while he worked on Friday, and then we would spend the evenings trying out new restaurants and being all cool going out to bars. I actually moved to Boston for a hot minute when I graduated to be closer to him. I lived in the North End and he lived in Beacon Hill. Unfortunately, due to major Crohn’s complications I eventually had to move back home to have surgery. I often wonder why the time spent there was hijacked by my disease because I really felt that Boston was going to be our city…but I do believe God put me there to be in the best care with some amazing doctors at MGH and I am very thankful for that, although it wasn’t ideal.
Q: When and where did you get engaged?
A: We got engaged in April 2013. I had major surgery in November 2012 and it led to endless complications and one life-threatening infection. We actually went to browse rings “for fun” before my surgery because, well, we both knew we wanted to get married and when you’re young and dating and dealing with serious surgeries, life just gets really real. Unbeknownst to me, Spyros officially picked out/designed my ring the day before my surgery. I had no idea through all of my trials, that during that time he had a ring. Bless his soul. Once I got well (which took forever), Spyros did not wait long to propose. I took my first big trip up to Boston in April to celebrate my birthday. A couple of days after, we drove to our favorite place – Watch Hill, Rhode Island, (where Spyros’ fam has a summer house) and spent the weekend. So on April 27, 2013, two days after my birthday, Spyros proposed to me on East Beach in the middle of the afternoon, and it was absolutely perfect.
Q: When and where did you get married?
A: We got married on May 31, 2014, in Charlotte at the church I grew up going to. It was the best day ever. Truly like a dream – I will do a whole post on our wedding soon :)! After all, it is almost our three year anniversary!
Q: How long did you live in Boston? In New York?
A: Spyros lived in Boston for 2 years. I lived there for a legit hot minute, just a couple of months unfortunately. We lived in New York for about a year and a half…our entire engagement and a couple of months of marriage!
Q: How long have you been back in Charlotte?
A: This July, we’ll have been in CLT together for three years! Sidenote: the first thing we did when we got back and moved into our apartment was get a puppy! Our long haired, blonde, mini dachshund “Doxie” is our first baby! Now we have our Evie too and it just feels really nice to call Charlotte our home. Since I am from here, I really wanted to make sure Spyros felt like it was his home too, and now that we are making a family together, he really does call Charlotte home! Thankfully, he fell in love with the south in college and couldn’t imagine NOT raising a family here. He loves it, y’all ;)!
Q: How many years have y’all been married?
A: Almost three years! But together in August for 8 years! Crazy.
Q: How many years were you married before you had a baby?
A: We got pregnant a year and 3 months into our marriage! We celebrated our 2nd anniversary with our 1.5 month old baby girl! We were not trying to have a baby, and due to my disease/surgeries I was told I would more than likely have a hard time conceiving, but we wouldn’t really know until we tried, and so we naturally family planned. Welllll, the first “woopsie,” we got pregnant and we couldn’t have been more thankful!!!! Perhaps sooner than we would have initially thought, but God always has the best plans and we both couldn’t imagine our lives any other way. We can’t remember life without her, and we never, ever want to.
I hope y’all enjoyed this little “Before the Blog” series!!! I loved going back in time and reliving many of the best memories of my life (so far!)…I am one blessed + grateful wife + mama!
