GUYS! Can you believe it? It’s time for another One Room Challenge! If you’re visiting from the linkup, HI! I’m so glad you’re here, and I hope you’ll stay a while!! I’m Elise, a Charlotte, NC, native, and I share this little corner of the internet with my sister, Hope. We’re attached at the hip and we both have baby girls…and I have a son who is well on the way. Sterling is due 5/31…and I MUST makeover his current wreck of a nursery in time!!!
Today the 6 weeks transformation begins as I makeover our guest room into Sterling’s nursery…all while keeping the functionality of a guest room as well. It is going to be subtly England inspired as an ode to my hubby’s homeland. I’m pretty predictable when it comes to design. My go-tos are always neutrals, rich textures, pattern, and mixing modern and traditional elements — this time all while echoing the English countryside. If you’e thinking a red and blue Union Jack, think again. This mama can’t do red. There will be Union Jacks, but they will be neutral! And I have to mention that this room is going to be a piece of work between its’ smaller nature, a queen bed, a crib, and a rocker. Ooof! It’s gonna be a tight squeeze, but we’re going to make it work. We don’t have another choice in our 3-2 ranch. It has to work!
I’ve been dreaming up this space for a while now, but before I show you my hopes and plans for the space, I have to show you the ugly. Okay, it’s embarrassing. Yes, the room in my home currently looks like this. It’s a junk room while it’s in transition. Don’t know where to put something? Just throw it into the guest room/Sterling’s nursery/the confused room. WOOF. I didn’t spruce it up at all for you. Eeeeeesh. Usually the door to this room is closed, so I blissfully ignore it, but today it’s all painfully hanging out on the blog. Literally cringing as I upload these pictures and hearing nails on a chalkboard in my head…
(Follow me on Instagram to see more via InstaStory…the real deal, y’all.)
Do you want to run away already? (I do which is probably why this picture is blurry upon my opening the door.)
At least we have crib! (Bought it secondhand — holler!). Also — paint! As much as I love sea salt, these walls are getting whitened. I’m going for what I know I love because it’s in our bedroom, our hallway, and on our brick fireplace wall: SW Pearly White.
OMG I can’t with this. Unless we play I spy. Let’s! I spy with my little eye…
An Amazon box with Evie’s birthday presents, the (unopened) rug that will replace this remnant rug, too many coat hangers, an activity mat, a pile of baby clothes, pink curtains, an unopened chandelier box that needs to go into the attic, oh, and the foam inserts to Sterling’s future anywhere chair.
MAKE IT STOPPPPPP! Even just straightening up this mess will be a huge bit of progress/relief. It really is that bad.
By far the prettiest nook in the mess. Hi, beautiful DockATot! And you get a sneak peak of some of the design in progress. How beautiful are my new buffalo check blackout drapes and matching bumper? EEEE! I have great plans for this focal point of the room as it’s the first thing you see when you open the door. I’m really excited about my custom sign from my new favorite Etsy shop, Sophistiqa.
Our filing cabinet lives in the guest room. I’m determined to reorganize, shred 3918053 papers, and set up a new filing space in my office/the mudroom so we can say SEE YA to this piece. Also, our home has 3 really random half (quarter?) closets. Just go with it.
More hangers thrown around the room, Evie’s first Keurig (REALLY excited for this to be in her new PB knockoff play kitchen–$164. You have to see it!), and a 32 week bump.
Yep, 32 weeks means this project’s reveal is timed oh-so-perfecly at 38 weeks. Is that awesome or what? Then as soon as I hit 40 weeks my in-laws will be in town residing in this space for most of June while Sterling posts up with us through his first days. With that said, keep in mind that I have to keep this room dually functional as nursery AND guest room; moreover, I want to keep the feel cohesive and put together.
Want to see what I have in mind? Here’s the inspiration!
Rug | SW Pearly White | SW Anonymous | Jesus Loves Me Sign
Crib | Buffalo Check | Acrylic Tables | Cloud Light | Pickstitch Quilt
Initial Block Blanket | Dresser | Art (inspiration — to be created by Lizzie Morrison Art) | Union Jack Rug | Mobile (new version)
The nursery will tie together modern and traditional elements (my favorite mix) and echo a loose English theme. From the Union Jack accents, to the sheep, to the cloud (and more tiny details to come), my hubby’s homeland will be woven into this space. One of the things I’m most excited about: my artist bff is painting super special piece for the nursery that will be inspired by my in-laws’ backyard (or “back gah-den” as they call it across the pond). It overlooks a big, beautiful field, the sun sets over it, and it’s my favorite space to look out upon as I sip my coffee or tea while I’m there. It’s just so peaceful. I can’t wait to have an honorary piece of it in our home thanks to Lizzie’s artistic brilliance. (Lizzie also painted the beautiful piece of abstract art that hangs over Nancy’s crib.)

More inspo thanks to my ORC Ideas Pinterest board…
The neutrals. The buffalo check. The textured blinds. The art above the crib.
More neutrals + this lighting…swoon.
I’d love to source some sort of big world wall map/decal too. Do y’all have any favorite shops for that?
Alright! That’s a start! I’ll see y’all back next Thursday, but I’ll keep you updated throughout the week on InstaStory, so be sure to follow along with me on Instagram through this journey! In fact today I’ll be sharing another real life look into the disaster zone that is the room as it is at the moment. Come on over! CHEERS! xx
A huge THANK YOU to these brands and shops who have graciously sponsored or provided products in support of this One Room Challenge. (And thank YOU for supporting the brands who support HHH and keep this little space alive + well!)
